California is beautiful country, but unfortunately it is often under threat from wildfires. A wildfire can quickly destroy the luxury custom home you had built in Ventura, Malibu, Santa Barbara, Thousand Oaks or another nearby city. Cheney Builders specializes in fire-resistant home construction. If your Southern California home was damaged or destroyed by wildfire, we can build you a new home that is better able to withstand the ravages of fire.
What Makes a Custom Home Fire Resistant?
It’s heartbreaking to lose your home to fire. If it’s a luxury custom home that you recently completed — your dream home — it can be even more devastating.
When we rebuild a home, we suggest a few alternative building materials, should your property be threatened again. These include:
- ICF Block. Insulated concrete blocks (ICF) have been used as a fire-resistant building material for years but only recently has it become more popular due to the increased fires. Now, homeowners in fire-prone areas are using this material more often. The Insulation is built into the product itself — in fact, it’s used to build Energy Star homes.
- Choose stone, brick or stucco siding. You want to select a siding for your luxury custom home that looks beautiful but is also noncombustible. You’re safest with material like stone, brick or stucco.
- Use fire-resistant roofing materials. Slate, copper, concrete and other types of stone and metal will provide you with a strong, fire-resistant roof. Other roofing materials are also class “A” fire rated.
- Relocate your home’s footprint. If you have enough land, consider rebuilding your home farther away from heavily vegetated areas.
You can take other measures to further protect your home from fire as well. We suggest fire-resistant windows and doors with the goal of preventing a fire from penetrating your home’s exterior. That means no air gaps or other avenues of access including vents. It’s also important to keep the exterior of your home free of flammable materials such as trees, shrubs and other wood structures.
Luxury Home Builders in Ventura
No one can guarantee a house won’t burn, but the more noncombustible materials you incorporate into your structure, the more of it will remain intact, should it be overtaken by wildfire. As wildfires continue to threaten homes in California and the Pacific Northwest, construction methods and materials will only keep improving to make homes more durable.
